This exquisite Saffron is considered the "Gold" of Greece. The filaments or threads are actually the dried stigmas of the Saffron flower, "crocus sativus linneaus". Each flower has only three stigmas, which are delicately picked by hand. The Greek locals are so dedicated to this precious harvesting, that they named their village after the flower, Krocus. More than 75,000 of these flowers are needed to produce just one pound of Saffron filaments, therefore making it the worlds most precious and expensive spice.
